The olive tree, Olea europaea, is a Mediterranean evergreen that survives well in the UK climate. It has attractive silver-green foliage, and tiny creamy-white flowers that appear in summer, and are followed by small, round green olives that ripen to black. Olives are winter hardy and can be left to grow in their natural form or shaped for topiary, as this one is. To maintain topiary shapes pruning is required. Olives are semi-drought resistant. They are fine to grow in containers, even when they become large trees, but would need a good watering regime in summer.
